My students like to have notes when they are doing speaking work. In order to wean them off their notes, I have done a variation of speed dating speaking where they practise the questions with a partner, but support is gradually withdrawn:
- read answers from your book
- speak rather than read answers (book still open)
- answer with book closed, sneaky peeks allowed!
- answer with book closed, no peeking!
Using this method has helped my Year 10 group to feel more confident about speaking as they always get a chance to practise with support.
